In 2002, contributions paid by companies to the industrial BGs added up to 8.9 billion Euro. It corresponds to
an average contribution of 1.33 percent of all wages and salaries. The comparable figure for 1960 amounted to 1.51 percent.
Thus, the German Berufsgenossenschaften can be considered the only branch within the social insurance scheme whose
contributions have remained stable over a relatively long period; in fact they have even shown a slight decrease.
The expenses of the Berufsgenossenschaften in 2002 can be allotted as follows: compensation which accounts for 7.6 billion Euro can be divided into one third (2.6 billion Euro) for rehabilitation (especially curative treatment) and two thirds (4.9 billion Euro) for pensions and other cash benefits. Expenses in the field of prevention were once more raised in the previous year to 697 million Euro.
