Technical issues and aspects of occupational medicine - occupational diseases - prevention
03. - 06. September 2003
in the BG-Akademie, Dresden, Germany
Asbestos, the substance which for a long time has been highly estimated as the 'mineral of a thousand possibilities', has changed its reputation during the last years and has been recognised today as one of the most dangerous carcinogen substances. In this context, the European Council of Ministers and the European Parliament have recently adopted a new Community Directive aimed at strengthening the workers' protection against the risks caused by asbestos at the workplace.
The European Commission and the Senior Labour Inspectors' Committee together with the German Labour Inspectorate and the Federation of the German Berufsgenossenschaften have organised in 2003 a European Conference on Asbestos.
This Conference intends to present the new Directive as the main strategic element in Europe for the better protection of the workers against hazards resulting from exposure to asbestos.
The Conference is an excellent opportunity for discussing the potential impact of the new Directive and for exchanging different experiences grown from the strict compliance to health and safety regulations regarding asbestos hazards. The results of this conference will also be, no doubt, extremely useful for the candidate countries and those countries outside the EU, where asbestos at the work-place continues to be a very serious threat.
